Great Product for Certain Uses September 5, 2010

First, the negatives: The product arrived with the drive belt off the track. That took me a few minutes to diagnose and check the manual and about 15 minutes to fix. The wheels seem loose, as if the axle wasn't fastened properly, but that doesn't affect performance.

Now the good stuff: Assembly was extremely easy and the engine started immediately. It cuts through thick, high grass very well, although you may need to go over the area twice or mow with a conventional mower to even out the grass height. It uses very little gas. If I could give a 4.5 star rating to the product, I would.

General comments: I use this to trim part of my rural subdivision yard that I plant in wildflowers and don't mow from April through late August. I also plan to use it to trim the grass and brush growing underneath trees where rocks and fallen limbs make a bladed mower difficult to use. Wheeled string mowers are great for those uses. Unlike other push mowers, they allow you to cut through thick vegetation at a rapid walk, so you can cut more quickly and get more exercise (and may need to take more breaks). I also worry less about accidents; the thick string can certainly cause a severe injury and you should use eye protection, but I doubt if the risk of a severed toe or thrown rock is as great as with a traditional mower. Hand held string trimmers don't work nearly as well for large areas. While a wheeled trimmer is ideal for my needs, it will have limited uses for lawns without thick vegetation or large areas where bladed mowers don't work well.

We elected to purchase this machine after seeing what a similar machine could do with our half acre of wildland vegetation. After UPS dropped off the package we were up and runnin' in minutes after filling with oil (Poulan even supplied the oil) and gasoline. No tools are needed to assemble!

This weekend we successfuly took on some major reclamation that would have taken days without the trimmer. It's simple to start and trim line changes in seconds. A big plus is the clutch that only disengages the trimmer head but lets the engine continue to run.

This is the second one of these units I have owned.

I recently sold my homme to my daughter and she kept the first unit to continue to trim around all the fruit trees on the property.

I did not get a say in the matter.

At our new home I soon grew frustrated with the tangling string and unwieldliness of the "traditional" string trimmer I had purchased and thus bought another Poulan.

It makes trimmming so much easier.

There is no possibility of tangled string and the cutting whips last and last.

When they do need changing it is 30 seconds or less and you are back trimming.

It is lightweight and is easy to push.

I could not be happier with it.

Finally had a chance to use the weedeater this weekend and it worked great,alot better than haveing to carry one around,so far no issues.It definately will cut weeds without bogging down.

Engineered well it starts easy and whacks weeds like a sheep on steroids. The small capacity gas tank is a good idea because when I finish the rough areas I am about on empty. So I am starting each job with a fresh tank of fuel. But it isn't a gas hog, I only fill it to about half a tank. Overall I am very pleased with this trimmer.

This was delivered quicker than scheduled.
