3 out of 5 stars Worked well all summer   September 7, 2010
Nicholas Shellhaas (Lincoln NE)
I've used this several times and It works well but i do however have a couple complaints.

Comfort: It's not as ergonomically as other models I have used. Its weight isn't distributed as evenly as it could be and during long usage it becomes awkward. It's not so bad as to cause severe discomfort but it's quite awkward.

Starting: It's a little finicky starting. Following the directions it worked without carb adjustment. The directions do include a prolonged warm up period. Other models are ready to go quickly.

First use: Assembly was quick and painless and the directions are decent. I followed them and it worked.

It's worked all summer and my 10k sq. foot yard is quickly trimmed so I'm not totally dissatisfied.

1 out of 5 stars Problems with Poulan   August 15, 2010
W. B. Flack
I bought this trimmer in Feb 2010 from Amazon. I started using it in March (live in FL). Right away it was hard to start (8-12 hard pulls), but once it was warmed up it did a decent job. About a month later it would not stay running. I adjust the carb and fixed that problem. In June I noticed the twist and edge would not work unless I stopped the engine, pushed the release and manually turn the shaft with my other hand. Yesterday my gas cap would not go on straight. It will not seat flush which means if i tilt the trimmer, gas will leak out. So after less than 6 months use I am looking for a new trimmer. Obviously it will not be a poulan.

2 out of 5 stars Not-so-good trimmer   August 13, 2010

Starts and runs good. Automatic line feed is a joke and a pretty big deal. Wish I had bought a tap on the ground one.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for residential use   August 13, 2010
Eric
I cannot imagine someone being disappointed by this if they are using it for residential purposes. Its light, has just the right amount of power and is easy to use. I have not had any problems with it while it's in idle, etc. To start, prime it a few times by pushing the clear rubber half ball thingy (as you can tell....I'm VERY savvy in the yard tool department, heck almost an engineer!), put it on full choke and give it a few pulls with the throttle held down. After about 2-3 pulls your good to go....just remember to take the choke off quickly or it'll die. Also, since the manual recommends holding down the throttle while doing this that means that the string is spinning as it's started. This can be a problem if you are laying the end on the grass. I took out a small circular area of lawn doing this before I realized that I should just rest the trimmer on top of my fence while I start it (the fence makes contact half way up the shaft so when the string starts spinning it's just in mid air). If you have a tall fence I suppose a deck, BBQ/smoker, child play center or toddler would work fine to rest it on. Just make sure that toddler doesn't MOVE! The curved shaft makes it easy to stand at a comfortable angle while trimming.

The fact that it rotates to double as an edger is great. That's one of the main things I was looking for in a trimmer. It works, however, I have found it rather difficult to edge accurately with it. The metal brace/guide on the front does not seem to serve me well in this capacity. The edging ability of this is just as good as any trimmer, maybe a little better since it actually rotates for you.....giving you a more comfortable position while edging. If you want to have great edges with ease......buy an edger.

The line is auto feed, which was a requirement for me in my trimmer. I have used the kind that you have to tap to get more line out and I hate that. I don't know about you, but I don't have a slab of concrete every 20 feet in my yard. This means I'm tapping on the actual lawn every time I need more line. By the time I'm done trimming it looks like my backyard has been visited by extraterrestrials.....due to the crop circles. I LOVE the auto feed capability. Also, re-spooling more line could not be easier. It doesn't even hook in anywhere. You just start feeding it in, attach it to the trimmer and centrifugal force does the rest for you. I love it. I also like the fact that there is only line sticking out from ONE side of the head. Many trimmers have two lines sticking out. I have used these and find them to be harder to control and the extra line is unnecessary. Inevitably one line is angled wrong, grips the lawn and the head of the trimmer takes OFF! Leaving some weird marks in your lawn. This is mostly a problem if you are trying to be a little more delicate in your trimming efforts, say, around a flower bed, etc. I find one line to be plenty and much easier to control.

All in all, this is the perfect trimmer. I would recommend it to any regular Joe that is looking to do regular Joe things with it. If you own a bunch of land (as in multiple acres that all needs trimming) or are doing large commercial jobs, look elsewhere.

OH! Please, wear earplugs when you are using ANY trimmer. Most are 2 stroke engines which are very loud at that close of a range. Without earplugs you are definitely damaging your hearing permanently. Sorry for the public service announcement, my father is an ENT Doctor

4 out of 5 stars Poulan P3500   July 6, 2010
Mike Wegryn (BUFFALO, NEW YORK, US)

I bought the Poulan P3500 because I owned the craftsman version for almost 10yrs. I had issues with the craftsmen - twice the shaft broke near the guard. I replaced the shaft several years back at a cost of around $40.00. I couldn't see spending another $40 on a shaft when the unit is that old. Plus I think that the new shaft was built wrong. The concept is great - no attachments needed to edge. And I edge all over the place, like near borders.

Anyway, I was excited when I received the item in less than a week. I set it up for operation. On the fourth or fifth pull, the pull cord came out. I was able to take it apart myself and re-install the cord. It was obvious that the screw that holds the cord was not tightened down properly at the factory. This took about an hour - I took too much apart to get to the area and had trouble putting it back together. (see above - I have experience taking a similar product apart and repairing). The job should have taken 15 minutes and I'll be doing it again because I did not wind the clutch assembly enough and the cord hangs out about an inch.

I only used it once so far but it was for about an hour of continuous use. I had no issues re-starting it after a break and everything seems fine.

I may be gullable after the problems I had with the crafstmen. And even my 8 year old son said 'Dad you have the worst luck with tools'. But AGAIN - the concept is great with no attachments to change.

I still give this unit a 4 1/2 out of 5 stars because of the convienence. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hopefully the unit lasts as long as the craftsmen but without the repairs.
