1 out of 5 stars Doesn't Run   August 7, 2010

I used a Ryobi 2-stroke string trimmer happily for 10 years. It died, and I bought Husqvarna 128L. The Husqvarna doesn't run. I followed the assembly, fueling, and starting instructions carefully. It starts but runs only about 20 seconds, then it abruptly cuts off. Same behavior with many tries. Experimented with leaving it half choked. No good. I will return it and get something else.

I bought this trimmer les than a year ago, and it has always started poorly. I recently could not start it and I took it in for service....well guess what...it needs a new piston and rings. To top it all off, the parts are back-ordered for a month. I figured I would call Husqvarna and tell them it is not appropriate service to have me wait July and August in Texas for my trimmer as those are the two months that I need it most. Well....Husqvarna doest have any phone numbers listed, really thet dont want to talk to you. In my opinion I bought a total piece of junk and have neceived world class poor service to boot.

If you want to waste your money on a product that blows a piston, and then wait the entire summer for Husqvarna to have it fixed, and have them not respond to your complaints...by all means buy this trimmer. If you want a trimmer that lasts with good customer service, buy something else!

4 out of 5 stars Power product that starts on the first pull   May 16, 2010
Michael E. Sullivan (Baltimore, MD)
I am extremely impressed with this product. Out of the box it started on the second pull. Very powerful and clean cutting. Has all the high end features with a high end name but with a much lower price. One rater here mentioned that this trimmer is a Poulan pro rapped in Husqavarna plastic. While this model is made in the US instead of Sweden like other Husqavarna products, it only shares a limited number of parts with the Poulan line. Most parts are unique to Husqavarna. The only reason I'm giving it four stars is because it is on the loud side and really requires ear protection if you dont want to leave your ears ringing. I love my husqavarna so far.

1 out of 5 stars IT'S A POULAN PRO NOT HUSQVARNA   October 8, 2009

I only need to show you this part number. 545001001 . Google it like this {545001001 cylinder}. this comes up as a poulan pro trimmer cylinder. I got this part number off of husqvarna's parts break down list for husqvarna 128l trimmer. The 128l trimmer is a 100.00 poulan pro trimmer wrapped in orange plastic instead of yellow. I didnt know husqvarna stickers cost over 100.00. This trimmer has one piston ring not two like a real husqvarna. It does however have the chrome cylinder lining. this would be poulans {Durachrome} cylinder.

If you want a husqvarna thats a true husqvarna get the 223l. Thats really the lower end husqvarna {for now}.
the 128l/ldx trimmers do not have the black plate stating husqvarna made in sweden like true husqvarnas have. In fact I could not locate an origin sticker/plate anywhere on it? My search told me its built in U.S.A..
That tells me the poulan/weedeater plant here owned by husqvarna. If you want this trimmer buy it with the poulan name and save 100.00.

The poulan PP133 trimmer appears to look just like this model. {minor plastic changes}. the first several numbers on the cylinder match . the last few numbers are different. But the poulan pro model cylinder is sold as a kit form. Cylinder and ring set combined. Thus the number change. The pp133 is rated at 33cc not 28cc like this model. Any small engine mechanic will tell you not to look at cc ratings. look at hp. rating. Big box stores get too advertise high cc ratings on small engines for sales tactics.

I'm not saying this is a bad trimmer. I bet its a real good home owner trimmer like advertised. I just think Husqvarna should put the correct name were it belongs and not mislead people. If I wasnt one of those people that researched everthing to death I'd not discovered this. I recomend researching anything over 100.00. Today it saved me 100.00 dollars. Hope I saved you money too.

5 out of 5 stars At long last, one that works!   June 4, 2009

Did a LOT of research online and in stores, only to be disappointed several times before finding the Husqvarna 128LDx (same as 128L, but with detachable shaft to allow for accessories)

My old Ryobi bit the dust, and the new ones in the big box stores are junk. I can't believe how downhill they've gone. Pain in the neck to assemble, no more multiple choke positions for when it starts varnishing up over time (even with proper maintenance, fuel treatment and storage). I put the new one I purchased back in the box and promptly returned it to the HD big box store.

I then looked at (and actually purchased and returned after reading instructions and learning more about them) the Echo and MTD (4-stroke). The Echo I bought had the kind of head where you put small pieces of string into the head easily, and then replaced the pieces when they broke off while trimming. This seemed too much a hassle to always have to stop and replace those pieces (however simple) everytime you hit a chain link fence or landscaping block. Some of the higher end Echo's are pretty nice, and were in 2nd place for me, but talking to a number of people in the know gave the nod to the Husqvarna. The Echo's have great motors, but a tendency to have string jams, meltdowns, etc. The Husqvarna is the easiest to add more line to, and is known to be bulletproof in that area.

The 4-stroke MTD seemed like a sweet idea, but when I read the instructions and learned about the maintenance (you need to have feeler gauges and be able to adjust the valve-lash -- not something your average joe homeowner really wants to mess with). Plus, I heard that the durability may not be there. Certainly seems there are good reasons that people who use these things professionally stay away from the 4-strokes (heavy and lack of durability).

So finally came upon the Husqvarna. Solid reviews whereever I went, and known for WORKING. Great, powerful motor that is easy starting and long lasting. Fairly light weight, trimmer head is a bump head that's very easy to refill. Straight shaft, professional style trimmer that I got for an even two bills at the dealer -- who set it up for me, got it running/adjusted perfectly and showed me all the ins and outs.
Other notes: Decent sound level -- not all that loud. Does not smoke -- Etec II engine is pretty clean for a two stroke. So far I am very pleased!
