NO MORE PULL STATRTING! September 6, 2010 DAN O 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'VE HAD SEVERAL GAS TRIMMERS OVER THE YEARS. WHEN THEY ARE NEW THEY START FAIRLY EASILY BUT AFTER A COUPLE OF SEASONS THEY GRADUALLY BECOME HARDER TO START AS PARTS DEGRADE. I HATE STANDING IN 90 DEGREE SUMMER HEAT TRYING TO PULL START A STUBBORN TRIMMER. THAT'S WHY I BOUGHT THE BLACK & DECKER 18 VOLT LITHIUM CORDLESS TRIMMER. IF THE BATTERY GOES DOWN AFTER 30 OR 45 MINUTES THAT'S OK. BY THEN I'M READY TO REST MY BACK WHILE THE BATTERY RECHARGES! I'M VERY HAPPY WITH THIS TRIMMER!!
Very good trimmer, but needs extra battery September 6, 2010 Stephen Sawyer (Livonia, MI USA) We had an earlier model of this type of self-adjusting string trimmer, and it works very well. The previous model used Ni-CD batteries, and they eventually wear out hence our purchase of this Lithium Ion model. The unit itself is still very good but the battery life is very disappointing - we can't get through an entire session of trimming on a single charge - not a lot more run-time than our old worn-out Ni-CD battery model. Most cordless tools come with two batteries and a charger, and this should too. To make matters worse, it's very hard to find any retailer - online or brick & mortar - that sells an extra battery, and when you do, you discover that they cost well over half what you paid for the trimmer. Ridiculous. If they included an extra battery - even if they increased the price by $10 or $20 - I'd be inclined to rate it five stars.
Good trimmer, worthless battery September 3, 2010 D. Libiez The trimmer itself is good for light duty trimming, but the battery (as everyone has said) is weak. Doing only edging, which puts a fairly heavy load on the motor, the battery lasts only 8-9 minutes. When doing only trimming it's about 12 minutes of continuous use. These times are during 95 degree heat however, and it may be that the battery has a high temperature cutoff, because it's always very hot after discharge. There's absolutely no way it can last 30+ minutes as another reviewer claimed in any conditions. So far it doesn't seem to use too much string either. All in all it's a big improvement over dragging 100' extension cord around.
very good August 29, 2010 Glenn Stanton (Old Tappan, NJ USA) I purchased this product because my gas powered unit kept breaking down due to the cheap plastic pull-gear used to start it. after 3 or 4 replacements @ 25$ each (part only, i did the work) i thought it was time to look for another tool.
this one had a number of decent reviews and so i ordered it. delivery in 2 days. yeah! charged up the battery in about 1 hour and assembled in about 10 minutes. gave my son a set of things to trim. about 45 minutes later he came in and reported excellence and we charged the battery again - about 30 minutes and we were back at it. i used it to edge and found it outperformed the gas unit.
overall i'm very pleased with this unit and would recommend it to anyone needed to basic trimming and edging on a property of 1 acre or less (we're about 2/3 acre). the fast charging and automatic spooling work great. if you need heavy duty, this is not it and you should set your expectations accordingly.
Skeptic turned convert August 29, 2010 K. Sime (Minneapolis, MN) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
After a bad experience with a different B&D product I was skeptical. This has exceeded expectations. Overall its easy to use, cuts well, and holds a charge. Specifics...
CHARGE TIME: I can trim and edge a 40 x 120 lot on one charge. It recharges in 20 minutes or less.
CUT: cuts even plants and vines pretty well. Cut is smooth.
EASE OF USE: Comfortable to hold, lightweight, easy to pivot. Very easy to convert from trimmer to edger.
I spent hours researching the alternatives at all price levels. After a summer of usage I recommend this one without hesitation!
